It was a bright day in January 2025 when Senior Three students at GS Ruyenzi gathered with curiosity and excitement. The air buzzed with anticipation as they prepared to embark on a transformative journey—one that would illuminate their dreams and chart the course for their futures.  The EjoHe Initiative’s “Career Guidance and Life Planning Education Program” had arrived, promising inspiration and a wealth of knowledge.

A Visionary Beginning

The day began with the headteacher’s warm welcome. He spoke passionately about the program, introducing the trainers who had come to guide the students. “This initiative,” he shared, “is not just about planning careers but about discovering who you are and who you can become.”

Among the trainers was Phn. Didier Habiyaremye, a pharmacist whose journey from humble beginnings to professional success was nothing short of inspiring. His story of resilience and determination set the tone for the day, reminding the students that greatness often begins in unexpected places.

Discovering the Self

The first session focused on self-awareness. Through thought-provoking questions and interactive discussions, the students were encouraged to delve deep into their interests, strengths, and passions. “What makes you unique?” the program coordinator asked, sparking a wave of introspection. Laughter and nods filled the room as students began to articulate their dreams and goals, perhaps for the first time.

Exploring Possibilities

Next came the exploration of careers. Students learned about the myriad pathways that lay ahead, from engineering and medicine to arts and entrepreneurship. With slides lighting up the classroom walls, they discovered how subject combinations influenced career options and how mentors, friends, and family play pivotal roles in shaping decisions.

A highlight of this session was the ABC framework: Ability, Balance, and Choice. These three guiding principles empowered students to weigh their options thoughtfully, ensuring their decisions aligned with their unique skills and aspirations.

A Story of Inspiration

Midday brought the much-anticipated testimony of Phn. Didier Habiyaremye. His journey began in a rural school, much like GS Ruyenzi, where resources were scarce but dreams were abundant. He spoke of studying hard, navigating challenges, and finding mentors who believed in him. “Never let your circumstances define you,” he said, his words resonating deeply with the young listeners. “You are capable of achieving greatness.”

Turning Dreams into Plans

Armed with inspiration, the students moved on to practical steps. They completed interest profiling questionnaires, discovering their RIASEC (Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, and Conventional) results. Lively group discussions followed, where they shared their insights and sought advice from trainers. The room buzzed with ideas as students began sketching their plans for the future, transforming abstract dreams into actionable goals.

Overcoming Challenges

As the day unfolded, the trainers acknowledged the hurdles students might face. They spoke of limited resources, the need for parental support, and the importance of mentorship. “This is just the beginning,” they emphasized. “Success requires persistence, collaboration, and a commitment to learning.”

A Hopeful Conclusion

As the session ended, the headteacher stood once more to address the students. “Today, you have taken the first step toward a brighter future,” he said. “Remember, your dreams matter. And with guidance, hard work, and determination, they are within your reach.”

The “Career Guidance and Life Planning Education Program” left an indelible mark on GS Ruyenzi. It was more than a training session; it was a story of hope and empowerment, a reminder that every student’s journey is filled with limitless possibilities. As the students left the hall that day, their eyes shone with determination, their hearts filled with dreams, and their minds equipped with the tools to turn those dreams into reality.

The Journey Continues

The EjoHe Initiative’s mission is far from over. This program is just one chapter in a larger story of empowering Rwanda’s youth. With plans to expand and evolve, the initiative continues to light the path for future leaders, one school at a time.
